Candle Care
Its worth knowing before you buy a candle to look out for a few things.
- Is the soy or other wax you are purchasing of high quality, this can affect the 'burn' causing tunneling (not melting to the edges) or ricing (gritty rice pieces throughout) also have a check - the wick should be a decent thickness.. likely if the wick is thin/not big enough for the vessel it will be prone to being brittle, burning too quick and therefore an uneven burn.
Before you light
- Trim the wick: Trim the wick to approximately 3-6mm before each burn to prevent smoke, soot, and the flame from getting too large. Remove any debris from the wick.
- Position the candle: Place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, flammable objects, children, and pets.
- Remove labels: Take off any labels or cellophane before burning.
During the burn
- First burn is critical: On the first use, let the candle burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to liquefy and pool to the edges. This can take 2 to 4 hours and prevents "tunneling" on future burns.
- Avoid long burns: Do not burn candles for more than 3-4 hours at a time to prevent the wax from getting too hot or the wick from getting too long.
- Don't move a burning candle: Never move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquid.
- Let it cool: Allow the wax to cool and solidify completely before you move or handle the candle.
Extinguishing the flame
- Use a snuffer: Use a snuffer to extinguish the flame to minimize smoke and preserve the wick for the next use.
- Center the wick: After extinguishing, gently recenter the wick while the wax is still soft so it's ready for the next time.
Storage
- Store properly: Keep candles in a cool, dry, and dark place, with the lid secured to protect them from direct sunlight. (this helps with colouring, fragrance strength and uneven melt.
